Following their escape from Winterfell, Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy are rescued by Brienne of Tarth. They journey on to the Wall, Theon returns to the Iron Islands. Following the death of Balon Greyjoy, Theon supports his sister's claim at the Kingsmoot. However, their uncle Euron Greyjoy is named king. Theon and Yara flee, intending to form an alliance with Daenerys.

In Winterfell, Ramsay Bolton's status in the North is threatened by Sansa's escape. He kills Roose and Walda Bolton and his new-born half-brother to secure his position. Harald Karstark and Smalljon Umber arrive at Winterfell to pledge their loyalty, presenting Ramsay with Osha and Rickon Stark.

At the Wall, Melisandre resurrects Jon Snow. After executing the mutineers, Jon leaves the Night's Watch. Sansa arrives at the Wall, and Ramsay sends a letter threatening the Starks and Wildlings, Jon decides to gather Stark loyalists to fight. Jon and Sansa are able to secure the allegiance of a few houses. As the Stark army marches on Winterfell, Ramsay kills Rickon. A battle ensues which nearly obliterates the Stark forces, before the knights of the Vale arrive and defeat the Boltons. Ramsay is captured, and Sansa feeds him to his hounds. Littlefinger declares the Vale's allegiance to House Stark and Jon is proclaimed as the King in the North.

Beyond the wall, Bran Stark trains with the Three-Eyed Raven. Bran witnesses visions of Ned and Howland Reed, and of the Children of the Forest. The Night King and the White Walkers launch an attack on the Three-Eyed Raven's cave, but Bran and Meera manage to escape. They are rescued by Benjen Stark. After Benjen leaves them at the Wall, Bran completes his vision of the Tower of Joy where it revealed than Jon is not Ned's child but his sister Lyanna's.

In Braavos, Arya resumes her training with the Faceless Men and her vision is restored. She is given the task of assassinating an actress, but cannot go through with it. The Waif is ordered to kill Arya but is instead grievously wounded. Arya lures the Waif into the catacombs beneath Braavos and kills her. Asserting her identity as a Stark, Arya decides to return to Westeros.

Jaime Lannister returns to King's Landing with Myrcella Baratheon's corpse. Jaime and the Tyrell army attempt to liberate Margaery and Loras, but Margaery has become a follower of the High Sparrow and Tommen has forged an alliance with the Faith Militant. Tommen relieves Jaime from the Kingsguard, and sends him to Riverrun. During Loras and Cersei's trial, Cersei uses a stockpile of wildfire to burn the Great Sept. The High Sparrow, Margarey, Loras, Mace, Kevan, and Lancel are killed. Pycelle is also killed by Qyburn's "little birds". When Tommen sees the Sept burning from the Red Keep, he jumps out of his window.

At Riverrun, the Blackfish is determined to not surrender the castle, despite Brienne's attempts to persuade him to come north. Jaime forces Edmure Tully to order the Tully forces to surrender. Brienne and Podrick flee, while the Blackfish dies fighting the Lannisters. After celebrating the victory Walder Frey is killed by Arya who is masquerading as a servant girl. After liberating Riverrun, Jaime returns to King's Landing and sees Cersei being crowned as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

In the Riverlands, Sandor "The Hound" Clegane survived his wounds. After his village is wiped out by outlaws affiliated with the Brotherhood Without Banners, the Hound pursues the Brotherhood. He encounters Lord Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr executing the others. Beric asks the Hound to join the Brotherhood in their journey north.

Ellaria Sand kills Doran Martell and seizes control of Dorne, with the Sand Snakes also killing Trystane. Ollena meets with Ellaria after the burning of the Sept to discuss an alliance with Dorne.

On their way to Oldtown, Sam Tarly, Gilly, and Little Sam visit Sam's family. Sam's father, Randyll, allows Gilly and Little Sam to stay, but after learning of her Wildling heritage prompts Sam to take them with him to the Citadel, along with House Tarly's ancestral Valyrian steel sword Heartsbane. Sam and Gilly arrive at the Citadel and Sam is made to wait for the Archmaester in the library.

Having been captured by Khal Moro, Daenerys Targaryen is brought to Vaes Dothrak to live out her days with the Dosh Khaleen. When the khals gather to determine Daenerys' fate, she sets fire to the Temple of the Dosh Khaleen, killing the khals. Jorah Mormont leaves to find a cure for his greyscale.

In Meereen, Tyrion Lannister makes an agreement with the slavers that gives them seven years to transition from slavery, but they renege on the agreement and launch a naval attack. Daenerys returns and has her dragons burn the fleet, forcing the slavers to accept the original agreement, while Daario Naharis and the Dothraki defeat the Sons of the Harpy. Theon and Yara Greyjoy arrive in Meereen soon after and form an alliance with Daenerys. After Daario and the Second Sons are left in charge of Meereen, Daenerys sails with her massive fleet accross the Narrow Sea towards Westeros.
